Exemption Guide

Texas property tax exemptions

Texas landowners can significantly reduce their property tax burden through special-use valuations. Instead of being taxed at market value, qualifying land is valued based on its agricultural or productive capacity - often resulting in an 80% or greater reduction.

Agricultural

The most common exemption. Covers livestock, crops, hay production, and general farming operations. Requirements vary significantly by county, with minimum acreage typically between 5 and 20 acres.

Wildlife Management

Maintain native wildlife habitat on land that already has an ag exemption. Requires a wildlife management plan with at least 3 qualifying activities like habitat control, erosion control, or census counts.

Timber

Managed timber production on qualifying acreage. Available in counties with suitable timber resources, primarily across East Texas. Requires active management for commercial timber harvest.

Beekeeping

One of the most accessible paths to an ag exemption. Growing in popularity with small-acreage landowners. Many counties accept as few as 6 hives on 5 acres, though requirements vary.

Environmental

Conservation and ecological laboratory designations for land used in environmental research or preservation. Less common, but available for qualifying properties.
